Phnom Penh - XINHUA
Around 400 Cambodian people, mostly youths, queued to buy an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus at a local telecom firm, Smart Axiata, on Friday as the new devices are just available in this Southeast Asian nation.
According to the firm's statement, the prices of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are between 728 U.S. dollars and 1,048 U.S. dollars, based on the sizes of memory chips. Apple products are very popular among middle- and upper-class people in Cambodia. "We offer the iPhone 6 at a very reasonable price, starting from 728 U.S. dollars only. On top of that, customers will receive one year warranty, free 4G mobile internet subscription and 1 GB data per month for a full year,"said Thomas Hundt, chief executive officer of Smart Axiata.
He added that Smart's official iPhone 6 launch in Cambodia pre- dated the phone's official release in the ASEAN giant Indonesia.
Cambodia is one of the world's poorest countries, with about 20.5 percent, or 3 million people, living under poverty line as of 2011. They could earn an income of less than 1.25 U.S. dollars a day, according to a World Bank Poverty Assessment Report released in February.
Cambodia's GDP per capita was 1,043 U.S. dollars last year, according to the government's figures.
