Twelve Modern Dynasty tombs were unearthed in Gebel el Silsila in the Upper Egypt governorate of Aswan, the head of the Egyptian archaeological sector said.

In statements on Wednesday, Mahmoud Afifi said the discovery was made during excavations carried out by the Swedish Lund University mission in tandem with the Ministry of Antiquities.

Afifi said human skeletons' remains and animal remnants were found inside the tombs and examining them would shed light on medical development and health care in this era. 

Caskets made of stone, clay and cartonnage were uncovered alongside amulets.

Maria Nilsson of Lund University, the mission director of the Gebel el Silsila Epigraphic Survey Project, said initial examination of the found human remnants showed that there were healthy people, while some suffered malnutrition.

She added some suffered bone fractures over excessive muscular efforts.

Nilsson hailed the achievements realized by the mission that started its work in Gebel el Silsila in 2012.
