Former U.S. President George H. W. Bush received an honor from the European Parliament in the U.S. state of Texas Monday as part of events marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The elder Bush was awarded the Robert Schuman Medal in a ceremony at Texas A&M University in College Station, home of the George Bush Presidential Library, making him the first American to receive the honor.
The award, named after former French foreign minister and prime minister Robert Schuman, was established in 1986 to recognize leaders who have advanced the cause of peace and human values.
The 41st president of the United States, who served one term between 1989 and 1993, was in office when the wall was toppled in 1989.
