Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria and Patriarch of St. Mark Diocese on Thursday appointed Isidore Macarius to spiritually lead a monastic gathering in Wadi al-Rayan.
The Coptic Orthodox Church refuses to recognize the gathering as a monastery, saying it lacks some conditions including an "illegal place" owned by the monastery and a report issued by a committee of the Church's Holy Synod.
