The technical and legal studies for the transformation of Serkadji, a high security prison during the colonial period, into a museum are "under way," said Thursday in Algiers Minister of Justice Tayeb Louh.
During a visit to Serkadji prison for the commemoration of 19 March, day of the cease-fire between the French army and the National Liberation Army, 1954-1962),  the Minister of Justice added that a sectoral commission is conducting studies for the prison conversion "in line with the valuation plan of Safeguarded Sector of Casbah of Algiers".
Closed then classified as historical site following Independence, the prison was reopened in 1965, then to be closed again in recent years. According to the minister "All the detainees were transferred in November 2014."
The results of these studies will determine the time required for the rehabilitation of the prison, before it opened to the public, said the Minister, without giving more details.
Tayeb Louh was accompanied by Culture Minister Nadia Labidi and Wali of Algiers, Abdelkader Zoukh.
The ministers laid a wreath of flowers at the Stele to the memory of martyrs executed in the prison before visiting the cells where were jailed Ahmed Zabana and Moufdi Zakaria.
