Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker

Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker met Monday with the director of energy at the World Bank to discuss future and existing cooperation.

The meeting took up ways to handle challenges facing the electricity sector in Egypt, Shaker said.

The electricity sector is able to meet the needs of investors, now that three plants have been established in cooperation with Germany's Siemens, the minister said.

He made it clear that energy efficiency programs are a top priority of the electricity sector, as well as maximizing the use of renewable energy.

Steps have already been taken to establish feed-in tariff (FiT) projects to produce 4,300 megawatts, Shaker said.

He also talked about a project to replace 40 million mechanical meters with smart ones over 10 years.

Such projects are meant to improve potentials of the power grid and reduce losses, Shaker noted.

The electricity sector will continue to implement projects to meet the needs of all other sectors, the minister assured.
