Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano

Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano said on Thursday he will visit the Libyan capital of Tripoli shortly to meet officials of the legitimate Libyan government.

Libyan Al Wasat gate quoted Italian news agency ANSA as saying that he will meet prime minister of the UN-backed government in Tripoli under Fayez Serraj and other officials.

The Italian minister's statements came during a hearing session at the House of Representatives attended by Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti.

The Italian foreign minister had reaffirmed his country's continued commitment to supporting the Libyan issue.

During a meeting with the Libyan Foreign Minister, Mohamed Sayala, in New York on the sidelines of the EU foreign ministers' meeting on Libya, Alfano expressed his satisfaction at the effective cooperation between Rome and Tripoli on managing migration flows.

Italian officials had urged Libyan army commander Khalifa Hafter to "contribute effectively" to the UN effort to stabilise Libya, and ruled out any military solution to end Libya's chaos.
