Counselor Ahmed Abdel Aziz Ibrahim Abul Azm was sworn in on Thursday before President Abdel Fattah El Sisi as new head of the State Council.
Presidential Spokesman Alaa Youssef said Sisi held a meeting with Abul Azm.
Sisi expressed appreciation for the role of the council which is one of the pillars of the Egyptian judicial system.
He said the council should proceed with its efforts to protect Egyptians' rights and freedoms.
