The Department of Transport (DoT) is recommending a new public transport network, including metro rail lines in the city of Abu Dhabi, an official told Khaleej Times. The plan, the details of which will be announced later, outlines three metro routes serving the metropolitan area and in different directions including Zayed Sports City, Saadiyat Island and Marina Mall. A bus rapid transit (BRT) loop will run through the heart of the city, with the metro rail lines crossing the roads in several locations. The proposed public transport network will serve many of Abu Dhabi’s key attractions, such as the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and the Cultural Foundation. By the end of the first phase, which is projected for 2030, the DoT estimates that the new system of public transport will eliminate 400,000 daily car trips, significantly reducing time and money spent on road travel. The department also estimates that the proposed network will eliminate 23,000 accidents annually, as well as cut down notably on vehicle emissions.
