Floating island
Golfers are about to have a new holiday destination that\'s well above par. A Dutch company has revealed plans to build an 18-hole floating golf course on the impossibly beautiful Indian Ocean island paradise of The Maldives.
The holes will be connected by a network of underwater tunnels — and as the above artist\'s impression shows, golfers will be able to walk right under the course from artificial island to island. Each island platform will contain around two or three holes, so there\'s more than just a hole in one.
The ambitious $500 million project breaks ground in more ways than one. The company who devised the high-tech concept, Dutch Docklands Company, takes great pains to emphasise that the facility will have zilch environmental impact on the Maldives\' precious coral reefs and natural life. To be built by \'floating\' architecture specialists Waterstudio NL. and run by huge international brand Troon Golf, the course is set to add plenty of tourist dollars to The Maldives\' kitty. Or should that be a birdie?
The slightly surreal course, set to open in 2015, will be located just five minutes away from Male International Airport, so seasoned or wannabe golfers can tee off while waiting for take-off.
