With more than 20,000 students studying at its various institutes, the University City, Sharjah, established in 1997 by the Supreme Council member and Ruler of Sharjah, His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, is home to over 15 educational institutions, according to an article in today's Gulf News daily.
"Dr. Sheikh Sultan established University City because of his desire to create an Arab academic movement in an educational environment that provides all the necessary facilities for the exchange of experiences and studies, bringing back the Arab world to its glory days in the scientific field," said Salem Al Qaseer, Chairman of the Academic Office of Sharjah.
The city witnesses continuous development and expansions, he told the newspaper, adding, "Latest additions are Al Qasimia University, the Sharjah Centre for Space and Astronomy and the Sharjah Research Academy, which was inaugurated by His Highness recently."
The management of University City offers many services, such as free transport for all students, and has more than 30 assembly points in Sharjah to move students to and from the campuses in the morning and evening.
Located next to Sharjah International Airport, the designs in University City are based on Islamic architecture and surrounded by green landscaped areas spread across 15,000 square kilometres.
It houses prestigious institutions such as the American University of Sharjah, offers courses in 26 majors and 53 minors at the undergraduate level, and 14 Master's Degree programmes through its four colleges.
The University of Sharjah, owned by the Sharjah Government, offers a total of 86 academic Degree programmes, including 50 Bachelor s Degrees, 17 Master's Degrees, seven PhD Degrees, one graduate and 11 associate diploma Degrees through its 12 colleges. The Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies, Higher College of Technology, Skyline University College, and Regional Centre for Educational Planning and Training, established as per agreement signed between the UAE Government and UNESCO, University Hospital Sharjah, Institute of Training and Judicial Studies, Sharjah Institute of Technology, University City Hall Department of Culture and Information, Al Qasimia University and the Police Science Academy.
