Doctors have reported the first case of arteriovenous fistula — a rare vascular disorder — in the UAE and said the patient, a 10-year-old boy, is doing well after life-saving surgery. The boy, identified only as Abdullah, developed a swelling on the left side of his forehead causing disfigurement and redness of the eye, associated with severe headache, said Rob Cross, CEO of Al Ain Cromwell Hospital. Dr Rajasekhar Cingapagu, who led a team of doctors for the three-and half-hour surgery, said: \"To our knowledge there were only 36 such cases reported in world and none from the UAE. The first such case in the world was reported way back in 1757, said Dr Cingapagu, noting that most of the patients reported with the condition were aged 20 and above. Only two patients were less than 10, he said.
