Nouakchott - Arab today
A delegation from the European Parliament, led by Inés Ayala Sender, visited Mauritania on Monday and met the Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz. The two sides discussed the planned constitutional amendments and the human rights issues in the country.
In a press statement, Sender said that their meeting with President Abdel Aziz tackled the potential constitutional amendments, adding that they discussed the human rights situation in Mauritania, noting that they gave the president their observations.
The parliamentarians also discussed the European cooperation with Mauritania to face poverty, and ensure security on the Pacific coast.
The visit of the European parliamentary delegation comes a few days before the government submits some constitutional amendments to the Mauritanian Parliament, which are rejected by the majority of the opposition parties.
