Transportation Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ezz denied statements attributed to Transportation Minister Hisham Arafat and published in some websites that 80 percent of the accidents take place because of mosques in railway stations.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Ezz underlined that a meeting was held between Arafat, Sharqia governor in the presence of some MPs of the governorate.
During the get-together, railway engineer in the region said that there is a mosque in the railway station which hinders developing railway crossings.
The minister stressed that halting developing railway crossings cause accidents, pointing out to fatwa (religious edicts) issued in May 10, 2015 from Darul Iftaa on demolishing mosques established on railways that contradict with development work and cause accidents that can expose the lives of citizens to danger, the statement read.
Demolishing such mosques will be carried out in coordination with Awqaf (Endowments) Ministry, the statement added, noting that another mosque can be established instead.
