Minister of Antiquities Khaled el Enany and Marsa Matrouh Governor Alaa Abo Zeid inaugurated Friday the Rommel Cave Museum in Marsa Matrouh.
The museum was closed for 10 years in order to renovate it at a cost of EGP 2.5 million.
The inauguration comes in light of the governorate's 102nd anniversary of its national holiday to celebrate Wadi Maged battle.
El Enany praised Marsa Matrouh governor's efforts to complete the renovation work of the museum on time.
While Abo Zeid pointed out that a large number of foreigners and Egyptians are expected to visit the museum, a matter that will contribute to boosting tourism.
The museum holds historical significance, as it dates back to the Roman era where it was used to observe ships sailing in the Mediterranean sea, then Rommel used it in World War II as a central command base.
The cave is located near the Rommel Beach in Marsa Matrouh, and it was originally cut out of the rocky cliffs during the Roman period as a storage space due to its position near an ancient seaport.
