Belgrade - Arab Today
Runaway Romanian millionaire businessman and former member of the parliament (MP) prosecuted for criminal acts was caught by the Serbian police in Belgrade, authorities confirmed Friday.
"Officers of the Serbian ministry of Serbian affairs have arrested (on Thursday evening) Romanian citizen S.G. (1978) based on arrest warrant issued by the Interpol office in Bucharest", Serbian police stated in a press release.
Romania's General Police Inspectorate (IGPR) also confirmed that the identity of the arrestee is Sebastian Ghita, former MP.
Ghita was charged by the National Anticorruption Directorate of Romania, and is being prosecuted in five cases in his homeland for influence peddling, fiscal evasion, money laundering, complicity to changing the use of EU funds, and corrupting voters during the 2012 parliamentary elections and the 2014 presidential elections.
He disappeared in late December last year and became unavailable to courts. On Jan. 10, the High Court of Cassation and Justice issued a European arrest warrant on his name.
