The number of immigrants in Italy surpassed 5 million people until the end of 2016, said the Italian National Institute of Statistics. 
In a statement Wednesday, the institute said that more than 5 million of the immigrants hold foreign nationality, representing about 8.3% of the population. 
The low birth rate in Italy has been continuing since 2008, added the statement.
