Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry handed over a message from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to Lithuania's Dalia Grybauskaite on the importance of boosting bilateral ties and fostering coordination in the various fields.

This comes as part of Shoukry’s visit to Lithuania, the first by an Egyptian minister to the European country, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid in press statements on Tuesday.

The spokesman underscored the importance of this visit, especially in light of Cairo’s keenness on bolstering relations and coordination with Lithuania, along with the other Baltic states: Estonia and Latvia.

Shoukry held intensive meetings with the Lithuanian premier and foreign minister, Abu Zeid said, noting that the talks touched on the nomination of Ambassador Moushira Khattab for the post of UNESCO Director General. The vote will take place during a UNESCO board session in October 2017.

Meanwhile, the foreign minister asserted the importance of pooling efforts to develop prospects of cooperation between Cairo and Vilnius in the various domains, particularly in the fields of renewable energy, investment, communications and information technology, as well as industry, he added.

Shoukry also reviewed progress achieved in Egypt’s economic reform program and its investment climate. On that score, he urged Lithuanian businessmen to invest in Egypt so that Cairo could benefit from Lithuanian progress in information technology, renewable energy and agriculture.

The Egyptian foreign minister also expressed keenness on cementing tourism cooperation with Lithuania, especially that Egypt is one of the main travel destinations favorable to Lithuanians.
