The Senate’s Legal Committee on Sunday endorsed the 2017 judiciary independence draft law as referred to it by the Lower House.

The bill seeks to enhance the independence of the judiciary through the financial independence of the Judicial Council and the allocation of an independent annual budget to it from the Justice Ministry’s budget.

It also seeks to ensure a qualitative representation in the judicial Council, sets the term of membership in it, achieve equal opportunity in the appointment of judges and enhance judicial inspection.

The Senate on Thursday returned the bill to its legal committee after it contradicted the House and amended several articles, including the condition for a judge to pass a contest before appointment.
