Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit stressed on Tuesday the necessity of rallying international efforts to face challenges to water and food security in the Arab region.
Speaking at the 40th Session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Conference, currently in session in Rome, Abul-Gheit said nearly 7 million persons across conflict-ridden Yemen are living under emergency levels of food insecurity.
Abul Gheit also called for unifying regional and international efforts to provide the necessary assistance for the affected people in the conflict-hit countries of Syria, Libya and Somalia.
The biennial international event groups over 600 high-level government officials and representatives from 194 countries.
The conference, which will last till July 8, will debate a number of pressing policy issues related to global food security.
It will also review and vote on the FAO Director General's proposed program of work and budget for 2018-19.
