Cairo - Arab Today
Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit has expressed full support for Yemen's legitimate government, led by President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, and its efforts to resume the peace consultations under the auspices of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed.
In a statement issued Monday, Aboul-Gheit strongly criticized the stances of Houthi group and ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh and what they did by escalating the military operations in Sana'a, Taiz, and on the border with Saudi Arabia.
He said that the declaration of Houthi group and Saleh of the formation of the so-called "supreme political council" is an escalatory step that would hamper the efforts made to establish the desired political settlement in Yemen.
Arab League Secretary-General called on Houthi group and Saleh to desist forthwith from taking any escalation procedures, abide by the cessation of hostilities and to respect the agreed terms of reference of negotiations which are represented by the GCC initiative and its executive mechanisms, the outputs of the Yemeni National Dialogue Conference and the relevant Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution No. 2216.
