Cairo police and firefighters were deployed in a Nasr City street after a gas pipe explosion was heard and news of gas leak were circulated.
Cairo Police chief Khaled Abdel Aal, in statements while examining the pipe, said a field operations room was formed to secure residents of Hassan Ma'amoun street after the main gas pipe got broken while a drainage company was doing some repairs.
The broken gas pipe caused a boom, spreading panic among the residents, he added.
Immediately, civil defense teams rushed to the scene and filled the hole where the pipe is located with water and foam to contain the leakage of the gas, the top police official said.
Also, all cars parked in the street were relocated and the street was sealed off.
Residents were advised not to use any matches or any other source of fire near the scene.
A team of the gas company is now repairing the broken pipe, he said.
