Cairo - Egypt Today
Egypt warned on Wednesday of the grave consequences of the current Israeli security escalation at Al Aqsa Mosque that left many Palestinians wounded and endangered the life of mosque imam Sheikh Ekrma Sabri.
In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry urged Israel to end violence and respect freedom of worship and the sanctity of holy places.
The statement called on Israel to refrain from taking more measures that only fuel the current tension, increase congestion and anger among Palestinians and undermine any chance to reach a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.
Tensions in the precincts of Al Aqsa Mosque began on Friday when armed clashes erupted between Palestinians and Israeli police, leaving three Palestinians and two Israeli policemen dead.
The clashes forced Israel to close the mosque as of Friday to worshipers then it was re-opened on Monday but after applying new security measures, including the installation of metal detectors at the entrances to the holy compound.
The new measures angered worshipers, triggering off more protests that left many Palestinians wounded.
