Al Ain - Arabstoday
Faulty electric wiring and violation of building codes were listed as the causes of a fire that gutted a home in Al Jimi district recently, killing a woman and her baby. The incident occurred at the house of a Palestinian family in the Al Khurais area of the district. Some 13 people were rescued from the house. Colonel Mohammad Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Director-General of Civil Defence in Abu Dhabi, said the investigation revealed that faulty wiring caused the fire following an electrical overload in the house that had been illegally subdivided. The garage of the house had also been converted into a bedroom. He said people should be on the look-out for safety risks and hazards and must refrain from violating building codes in villas, buildings, other residential areas and work places. He added that the risk of fire increases during the summer months due to higher temperatures. First Lieutenant Abdullah Hamad Al Tamimi, head of the Customer Service Centre at the General Directorate of Civil Defence in Abu Dhabi, urged residents to keep fire extinguishers in their homes and routinely check electrical appliances. He advised against any decision that would result in the compromising of the quality of electrical appliances and wiring. From / Gulf News
