The Central Bureau for Judiciary Investigations (BCIJ), has arrested 15 people under suspicion of having links to ISIS.
“The fifteen taken into custody were found to be operating in the cities of Casablanca, Fez, Nador, Tétouan, Essaouira, Fqih Bensaleh, Tangier, Marrakesh, Oujda and Agadir,” the Interior Ministry said. The arrests took place on Wednesday and Thursday.
In a statement released by the ministry, it was revealed that a preliminary investigation showed the accused were involved in large-scale incitement campaigns, threatening to execute terrorist operations in Morocco.
The operations, involving murder and destruction were to have been carried out by groups linked to the so-called ISIS cells in Syria and Iraq, said the statement.
According to the probe, some of the individuals apprehended were trained in bomb making. They were also found to be purchasing the raw materials needed to manufacture explosives to execute terrorist operations against some sensitive sites, including entertainment and public facilities in several Moroccan cities.
The statement added that one of the suspects conducted surveillance and targeted location operations in Casablanca with the aim of making a video claiming responsibility for an ISIS terrorist operation.
The probe also uncovered evidence that some of those arrested had attempted to procure guns to assassinate public and military figures.
The accused will face justice once the investigation is completed, under the supervision of the public prosecutor.
