The Chinese leadership supports a peace accord proposed by Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou, a spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said on Wednesday. Ending hostility across the Taiwan Strait and signing a peace agreement is in the interests of the Chinese nation, compatriots on both sides of the Strait, the spokesman said. Beijing hopes the mainland and Taiwan could strengthen communication and mutual trust to create conditions for a possible peace agreement, he said. Ma said last week a China peace accord would be his goal if he is re-elected in January.
