Ilya Zhitomirskiy, the 22-year-old co-founder of the fledgling social networking site Diaspora, has died in San Francisco, police said.A department spokesman told CNNMoney police received phone calls about a possible suicide.San Francisco police officer Alvie Esparza said a medical examiner will determine whether Zhitomirskiy\'s death was self-inflicted. The determination could take weeks.Zhitomirskiy and three other New York University students established Diaspora last year. They positioned it as an open-source, decentralized alternative to Facebook and promised to give users more control over privacy, The Tech Chronicles blog of the San Francisco Chronicle reported.Two months ago Diaspora began inviting a limited number of members to sign on to an alpha version of the social network.Last month, the project ran into financial problems and the founders asked for new donations.
