A deputy sheriff was wounded and a rape suspect was killed in a shootout Thursday in San Bernardino, Calif., investigators said. San Bernardino County sheriff\'s deputies searching for a suspect in a March 22 rape and robbery had gone to a shopping center shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday, when the suspect saw them and started to run, sheriff\'s department spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said. As he ran, the suspect turned and fired several shots at the deputies, wounding one before he was fatally shot, The (Riverside, Calif.) Press-Enterprise reported. \"He struck one deputy in the leg,\" Bachman said. \"Several deputies returned fire … and he died at the scene.\" Deputies detained a woman who was with the suspect. The wounded deputy was treated at a hospital and released. Police did not identify any of those involved in the shooting.
