The Belgian federal police said a man was shot in downtown Brussels on Friday evening after he attacked the troops with a knife, Sky News reported.
The suspect is in a critical condition after he was shot by soldiers close to the city's Grand Place tourist attraction.
The soldiers opened fire on the man and the suspect was still alive, but in a critical condition, Belgian prosecutors said.
