Witnesses say the two suburban Boston police officers who wound up in a dispute that ended in gunfire and a wounding had seemed to be friends. Beverly Police Officer Jason Lantych was seriously wounded when he was shot in the leg Saturday by Hamilton Police Sgt. Ken Nagy, who returned to the Starbucks parking lot that night and apparently shot himself to death, officials said. Lantych underwent surgery Saturday night at Beverly Hospital; however, there was no word on his condition Sunday, the Boston Globe said. Employees of a nearby restaurant said Lantych and Nagy frequently met for lunch and had always appeared to be on good terms. \"He was always so nice, and quiet, and very polite,\" employee Brenna MacKay said of Nagy. \"We\'d joke around with him, and with all the officers who come in here.\" It was not known what prompted the shooting; however Lantych likely would have bled to death without the intervention of a group of customers. The Boston Herald said two Harvard University premed students used a first aid kit and a customer\'s belt to bind up Lantych\'s wound until an ambulance arrived. \"We applied double pressure (on the wound),\" student Tim Mercier told the Herald. \"There was some prayer going on.\"
