Groups of protesters smashed shop and bank windows and set alight two cars, AFP reporters saw, as tens of thousands of people marched through central Rome in a protest against the financial crisis. The incidents occurred around Via Cavour near the Roman Forum as protesters made their way to a large square in front of St John Lateran basilica for a rally as part of a day of protest around the world.
