A small plane crashed at the end of a runway at Falcon Field Airport in Mesa, Ariz., Tuesday morning, killing the two people on board, authorities said. The aircraft was proceeding down Runway 4 of the airport and crashed into an earthen berm at the end of the runway about 8 a.m., causing a fire with significant and visible smoke, KSAZ-TV, Phoenix, reported. The plane was attempting to take off when it crashed, KTVK-TV, Phoenix, said. After the fire was extinguished, Mesa Fire Department spokesman Forrest Smith confirmed the pilot and one passenger aboard the plane were dead. No names were provided.
