Cairo - Egypt Today
Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Gheit on Friday condemned Israel's closure of Al Aqsa Mosque and banning of worshipers from performing Friday prayers.
Abul Gheit affirmed that such measures would fuel extremism and escalate tension in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in East Jerusalem, spokesman for the AL chief Mahmoud Afifa said in a statement.
Israel should not deliberately push forward matters in the holy city to the brink of explosion, he added.
The current situation in the occupied Palestinian territories will not continue, the AL chief said.
He called for launching a serious negotiation process to end the occupation and establish an independent Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with Al Quds city as its capital.
