The funeral of Egyptian Nobel laureate Ahmed Zewail kicked off on Sunday at Field Marshal Tantawi Mosque in Tagammu el Khameis.

Funeral prayers were led by Ali Gomaa, former Egypt's Mufti and member of the Muslim Council of Elders. 

Attending were Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El Tayyeb, presidential adviser for religious affairs Osama el Azhari, senior state officials and public figures. 

A military funeral for Zewail will be held later in the day.
