Supporters of Hertha salute their team before a German first division Bundesliga football match

Hertha Berlin stayed on course for the Champions League on Friday but needed a late goal from Salomon Kalou to secure a 2-2 draw with rock-bottom Hanover.

Hertha had been stunned 5-0 last weekend by European rivals Borussia Moenchengladbach while relegation-haunted Hanover was looking to end a five-match losing streak in the Bundesliga.

Vedad Ibisevic opened the scoring for Hertha after just three minutes but Artur Sobiech pulled the visitors level 15 minutes later.

Manuel Schmiedebach then put Hanover ahead just before the hour mark before Ivory Coast star Kalou saved Hertha with a 72nd minute equaliser for his 14the goal of the season.

Despite the point, Hanover is still bottom, 10 points from safety.
