Sri Lanka, replying to Pakistan's first innings total of 138, were dismissed for 315 in the morning session of the third day's play in the second Test in Colombo on Saturday.
When play began after a 45-minute delay due to bad weather, Sri Lanka added 11 runs to their overnight score of 304-9 to gain a lead of 177 runs.
Leg-spinner Yasir Shah finished with figures of six for 96.
Pakistan lead the three-match series after winning the first Test in Galle by 10 wickets.
