Serena Williams overcame a late hiccup on Monday to start the second week of the Australian Open a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Barbora Strycova and advance to the tournament's quarter-finals.
The six-time champion lost on serve while trying to close out victory leading 5-3 in the second set. But she then worked her way back to match point, before Czech Strycova clipped the top of the net with a volley.
Williams won the last of her 22 grand slam singles titles last summer at Wimbledon but bowed out of the US Open in the semi-final.
