SV Hamburg on Tuesday sacked coach Christian Titz, citing modest results in their debut second-division season, with Hannes Wolf named successor.

"We came to the conclusion that unfortunately we haven't seen the desired development and see a growing risk that we won't meet our season aim," Hamburg sports director Ralf Becker said in a statement.

Hamburg were relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time last season and seek immediate promotion back into the top flight.

They are ranked fifth, just two points off the top, but have won only once in their last five games.

Three of the other four ended 0-0, including the derby with St Pauli, and they crashed 5-0 at home against Regensburg.

Hamburg's former reserve team coach Titz took over the first team in March and almost kept them in the top flight.

Wolf, 37, led VfB Stuttgart back into the Bundesliga in 2016-17 but had to go there in January. He was to be officially presented later Tuesday.
