Member of the Committee of Experts to select the members of the Electoral Commission Ameen Baker there is a standard for selecting members of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Commission of Elections, while they received proposals to form the committee from only judges.
He added, in an interview with “Arabs Today”, “Large blocs rejected the proposal to add 7 judges to oversee the work of the Independent Electoral Commission although it would correct the course of the political process and to save the country. “These judges actually supervised the elections after the deputies voted on them.”
Bakr announced that he is not convinced of some of the answers mentioned by the President of the Electoral Commission during his answer to the questions addressed to him in the House of Representatives, saying that the process of questioning the head of the Electoral Commission is an interrogation of all members of the Commission.
He blamed the foreign interference for keeping the commission, saying that a number of foreign countries work to keep the commission to achieve political gains at the expense of the Iraqi people. He stressed that the government should take serious position from the recent developments to protect the country from any foreign influence during the coming period.
He stressed that it is difficult to limit a number of the commission’s membership to judges, saying that it would not be possible practically. He added that the work in the commission could not limited to a specific terms. He added that the country is scheduled to witness both parliamentary and local elections, adding that the coming events require keeping the members of the commission to perform their work.
