Freshly crowned US Open champion Angelique Kerber on Monday officially dethroned Serena Williams atop the women's tennis rankings released by the WTA.
Kerber is the first German top the rankings since Steffi Graf's last reign at the top ended in March 1997, after Williams had had led the way a record-equalling 186 straight weeks.
The change at the top was decided on Thursday when Kerber won her semi-final and Williams then lost hers against Czech Karolina Pliskova.
Kerber, who beat Pliskova for the New York title Saturday, has 8,730 points to Williams' 7,050. Spain's Garbine Muguruza is third on 5,830.
Pliskova meanwhile rose from 11th to sixth after her best result at a grand slam, reported dpa.
