At least a dozen of people have been killed and scores more are missing at a hydroelectric plant under construction in northeast India that was hit by a powerful earthquake, officials said on Wednesday. Construction official Jigmee Bhutia said Wednesday his company fears at least 40 workers living near the power plant being built in the Indian state of Sikkim may have died in landslides triggered by Sunday''s 6.9-magnitude quake. Local official Janim Lepcha said heavy downpours and mudslides on the roads leading to the remote site were hampering efforts by soldiers to reach the area.
