A nationwide seismic risk monitoring and management system will soon analyse and warn against risks of earthquake and related disasters in the UAE, the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City announced in a statement Monday. According to the statement, the Dh95 million system will be an expansion of a project initially envisaged by the municipality for Abu Dhabi emirate. The decision to expand the system to cover all emirates was made at a three-day municipality workshop attended by government officials, seismic experts and civic decision makers. Delegates at the workshop also discussed how the risks analysed by the system could eventually be incorporated within the local building codes, as well as how information about tremors would be posted online as they occurred. Salah Awadh Al Sarraj, acting executive director of town planning at the municipality, said the municipality was keen to adopt the most advanced international standards in evaluating seismic risks so that decision-makers could put in place all necessary safety measures.
