Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INET)

The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INET) said Nicaragua, with a population of 6 million people, is now confronting the worst drought the country has experienced in the last three decades.

INET projections indicate the drought, related to the El Niño weather phenomenon, will continue during September and October, RT reported.
Minister of Agriculture Edward Centeno, has said the lack of rain could wipe out 1.1 billion bushels of corn, 100,000 bushels of peanuts and just over one million tons of rice during the agricultural cycle from 2014 to 2015.
Meanwhile, the government is conducting specialized studies on the phenomenon of drought and its impact on the population.
