Mankiewicz, the film won the very first Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The award was given to Emil Jannings as Sergius Alexander. In 2006, the film was selected by the United States Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry. 17 May: Safety Last! (1923) A romantic comedy starring Harold Lloyd. The movie includes one of the most iconic scenes in the history of silent film: Lloyd holding on to a large clock as he dangles from a skyscraper above moving traffic. 24 May: City Lights (1931) A romantic comedy-drama written by, directed by, and starring Charlie Chaplin. The movie is considered one of silent cinema\'s gems and an important accomplishment in Chaplin\'s remarkable career. 31 May: Sunrise (1927) Also known as Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, this American film was directed by German film director F. W. Murnau, and won an Academy Award for Unique and Artistic Production at the first ever Academy Awards ceremony in 1929.
