Working behind the scenes won't allow you to escape public scrutiny. Someone will see your work and demand to meet you. Although the last thing you want is to talk to this micromanager, you'll have no other choice. It's possible you will be asked to assume new responsibilities. This is not the time to put down your foot. Be as agreeable as possible in public. Search for another job in your private time. It's much easier to find employment when you have a position.
