The Dow Jones industrial average added 2.97 percent, a 330.06-point clip higher, closing at 11,433.18. Oil prices also gained, adding $2.92 to reach $85.90 per barrel for November contract West Texas Intermediate crude oil.
The dollar fell across the board, helping commodities sold in U.S. dollars, as the weaker dollar makes them more affordable to foreign investors.
The euro rose to $1.3644 from Friday\'s $1.3377. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 76.66 yen from Friday\'s 76.77 yen.
The dollar index fell sharply, losing 1.55 percent to 77.53.
The British pound rose to $1.5667 from $1.5562. The U.S. dollar fell to 77.7806 Hong Kong dollars from 7.7819 HKD.
The U.S. standard slipped to 1.0265 Canadian dollars from 1.0394 Canadian. The Australian dollar rose to $1.0002 from Friday\'s $0.977.
