Indian main stock index Sensex opened at 17,593.67 points Tuesday, 31.06 points or 0.17 percent higher from previous close of 17,562.61 on festival optimism. Oil and gas, fast moving consumer goods, state-owned companies and metal sector grew 0.79 percent, 0.67 percent, 0.66 percent and 0.51 percent, respectively. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, property developer Jaiprakash Associates, aluminum refiner Hindalco and automobile maker Mahindra and Mahindra picked up 2.4 percent, 1.89 percent, 1.47 percent and 1.14 percent. Meanwhile, IT, technological and health care sector declined 0. 45 percent, 0.25 percent and 0.14 percent, respectively. Software outsourcing player Infosys, drug maker CIPLA, Tata Motors and Sun Pharma dipped 1.13 percent, 0.72 percent, 0.4 percent and 0.38 percent. Sensex is the common name for the Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index. It consists of the 30 largest and most actively traded stocks, representative of various sectors, on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
