Nikkei rose sharply Monday morning, as market was encouraged by positive steps being made in easing the eurozone debt crisis. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 119.92 points, or 1. 38 percent, from Friday to 8,798.81. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 7.07 points, or 0.95 percent, to 751.28. The gainers included the rubber products, mining and insurance sectors. The precision machinery sector and the miscellaneous products sector that includes games giant Nintendo were the only decliners.
