About 2,458 tons of various foodstuffs and 139,527 litres of juice and beverages were destroyed after became unfit for human consumption, the Health Ministry announced.
The huge quantity of rotten foods had been seized during campaigns that were carried out in different governorates from the beginning of 2017 until mid August, Director General of the Food Control Department at the Ministry of Health Maysa Hamza said in a press statement released on Sunday.
Some 224.468 samples have been withdrawn from these foods and sent to laboratories to verify their validity, she added.
Nearly 132,000 food outlets have been inspected, and 16,135 outlets were shut down by inspectors due to the lack of licenses, she asserted.
She noted that 86,736 reports were filed against violations committed by sellers.
