our children shouldnt grow up like us

Abdul Rahman Al-Rashed

If you love your children and hope the best for future generations, you have to hope that our ideas and lifestyles end with us. We have to recommend one important lesson for those who will come after us, and that would be not to commit our mistakes. Despite the violence we see around us, I am optimistic that we are living the end of crises. It may prolong for a year or extend for another 20 years, but it won’t last after almost everyone has suffered and has witnessed what happened. How will the Arab world look like after 20 years? I imagine it will be stable just like Southeast Asia stabilized and just like Europe stabilized after the end of World War II.= This is not a prophecy but a reading or perhaps a wish. Children being born today are born during the peak of the region’s struggles, which despite its horrors, we say they are the final chapter of an era that’s been entirely difficult. I think today’s children have a chance to escape their parents’ and grandparents’ history. Along with the dream, they also have the authority to transfer to a new orbit - a new world which they will draw to decide the life they want for themselves. A chance to escape As for why? I think there’s a chance to escape to a better world and future. The reasons are not few. Mantras have been consumed, experiences ended, capabilities ran out and miseries manufactured by the region’s sons. There was one cause, one idea and one aim, but the dam collapsed, and crises flooded the region. Everyone became victim after they were either observing or cheering Europe lived its final war and it was enough to conclude the series of wars. World War II terrified the victors and the defeated alike, and it was the end of destructive ideas. Our situation is similar. Europe has been through its religious wars just like we are living them today. Then it witnessed a phase of wars in the name of nationalism and eventually everyone co-existed. The Arab world and the Middle East in general lives a continuous phase of struggles and wars that never stopped for a single year ever since liberation from colonialism. Arab political nationalist and leftist awareness formed. Then there was the struggle with global Zionism over Palestine then the era of religious wars that began at the beginning of the 80’s and that’s ongoing until today. Those born today have the chance to exit this long tunnel and establish a world free of struggles over ideas and borders. It’s our duty to show those we love the way out and not the means to remain within the line of fire. Who doesn’t want a happier world for his children? Disappointments guide us towards a better future. The first step towards building a better future is to admit our disappointments and mistakes The views expressed by the author do not necessarily represent or reflect the editorial policy of Arab Today.
